LEXINGTON, Ky. – Today started with the 10th victory of the season for the University of Tennessee at Martin STUNT program but the No. 3 seed Skyhawks fell in the Mid America West Conference Championship semifinals in the second of back-to-back games in Historic Memorial Coliseum.
UT Martin clinched a spot in the final three teams of the tournament courtesy of a 16-12 triumph over No. 4 seed Mercyhurst – its second victory over the Lakers this season. The score was tight after the first round of partner stunts as it was knotted at 3-all. The Skyhawks created a little separation in the second quarter (pyramids and tosses), outscoring Mercyhurst by a 3-0 margin to lead 6-3 at the intermission. Each side once again piled up three points during the third period (jumps and tumbling) to make the score 9-6 in favor of UT Martin going into the team routine fourth quarter. The Skyhawks added seven more points to their tally to earn a trip to the tournament semifinals.
Addison Cary's 14 points led the way for UT Martin while Emily Hartley (13), Kaity Mistretta (11), Ashley Myles (11), Emily Wood (11), Natalie King (10) and Jade Reed (10) also scored in double-digits for the Skyhawks.
Playing its second game in a row, UT Martin found success in the pyramids and tosses second quarter but fell 18-4 to No. 2 seed Trevecca Nazarene. After the Trojans took a 4-0 advantage in the first quarter (partner stunts), the Skyhawks not only got on the scoreboard but were awarded three points in the second period to make the score 7-3 at the halftime break. However, UT Martin was outscored by a 4-0 margin in the jumps and tumbling third quarter. In the final quarter of play (team routine), the Skyhawks came away with one point but it wasn't enough as Trevecca Nazarene moved on to the championship contest against top-seeded Kentucky.
UT Martin was led by eight separate players (Ali Workman, Mistretta, Kacey Reedy, Hartley, Cary, Jade Reed, Comuzie and Wood) with four points apiece.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Hartley was named to the All-Mid America West Conference first team. The junior out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. collected a team-high 117 points during the regular season, topping the team in scoring in four of the Skyhawks' 12 games. Her season-high of 17 points came against Central Arkansas on March 27.
UT Martin will now turn its attention to the STUNT National Championship event, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn. on April 24-27.
