LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin STUNT squad made history in its Mid America West Conference Championship debut today, defeating Central Arkansas with a perfect game (24-0) to advance in the winner's bracket. Later in the afternoon, the third-seeded Skyhawks battled but fell to Trevecca Nazarene by a 20-12 margin in the double-elimination tournament.
In the first matchup of the day against the No. 6 seed Bears, UT Martin controlled the game from start to finish. The Skyhawks raced out to a 4-0 advantage after the first quarter (partner stunts) and claimed an 8-0 edge at the halftime break thanks to another 4-0 win in the second quarter (pyramids and tosses). Four more points went UT Martin's way in the third quarter (jumps and tumbling) before the Skyhawks capped off the team routine final quarter with a dozen more points.
A whopping 15 UT Martin players earned double-digit scoring performances, led by Emily Hartley's 16 points. Ali Workman (15), Kaity Mistretta (15), Addison Cary (15), Jade Reed (14), Ashley Myles (14), Braylee Smith (13), Livia Comuzie (13), Emily Wood (13), Natalie King (11), Kacey Reedy (11), Emmy Melton (10), CeCelia Dollison (10), Leah Newberry (10) and Alexa Stock (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks.
Matched up against No. 2 seed Trevecca Nazarene in the second round, UT Martin put up a fight but its comeback attempt in the final quarter ultimately fell just short. The Skyhawks trailed 3-1 in the partner stunts opening period before earning three points in the pyramids and tosses second quarter. Down by a 7-4 margin at the intermission, the Trojans took a 10-4 lead following the jumps and tumbling third quarter. UT Martin bounced back to secure eight points in the fourth quarter (team routine) but it ultimately wasn't enough.
Workman, Hartley and Cary each scored a team-best nine points each with Reedy, Myles and Wood following closely behind with eight points apiece.
The Skyhawks (9-5) return to action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CT in Historic Memorial Coliseum, facing the winner of the 10 a.m. matchup between No. 5 seed Missouri State and No. 4 seed Mercyhurst.
