MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team let both games of a doubleheader get away from them Sunday, as it fell twice to Tennessee Tech, 2-0 and 9-4 in 11 innings, at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.
In game one, the Skyhawks carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but two runs by the Golden Eagles in the top of the seventh sealed their fate. Despite five scoreless and hitless innings from pitcher Natalie Kreuziger, UT Martin could not back her up with any runs. The Skyhawks tallied seven hits in the game but could not plate any of them and left seven stranded on the base paths.
Kyla Harley led UT Martin by going a career-best 3-for-4 at the plate, while Morea Hodge tallied two hits and Jordyn Hustey and Carly Ward each had one. Kreuziger finished the game with no hits or runs over 5.0 innings to go along with four strikeouts.
In game two, Tennessee Tech erupted for four runs in the opening frame but would not score again for nine innings. Joleanna Fox got the Skyhawks on the board in the third on an RBI fielder's choice, before Avary Makarewicz tied the game in the fourth with a three-run home run.
The best chance for UT Martin came in the ninth inning when Jordyn Hustey reached on an error and Dylan Scott and Kyrsten Brown each singled to load the bases with one out. However, the Golden Eagles thwarted the Skyhawks' attempt to win by throwing a runner out at home and retiring the next batter.
In the 11th, the Golden Eagles once again erupted offensively scoring five runs off seven hits to give the Skyhawks a mountain to climb in the bottom of the inning. Kyrsten Brown had a one-out single in the frame, but it was not enough as Tennessee Tech held on for the win.
Makarewicz, Kennedy Brown, and Kyrsten Brown each had two hits in the game, while Harley, Ward, Alli Robinson, Dylan Scott and Hodge all had one. Ashtyn Green threw seven complete innings in relief for the Skyhawks in game two and finished the contest with a team-high five strikeouts.
UT Martin returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Southern Indiana. The two teams will play a doubleheader, beginning at Noon Friday, followed by a single game Saturday, also at Noon.
