EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team found itself on the wrong side of a 1-0, eight-inning decision Thursday, falling to Southern Indiana in the first game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at USI Softball Field in Evansville.
Pitcher Ashtyn Green rolled through the first seven innings of Thursday's series opener, allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts and only one walk. However, in the eighth, it all fell apart for the Skyhawks, as they gave up three hits, including the game winner. With two outs and runners on first and second, Sydney Long stepped up for her team with a single up the middle that scored Kennedy Nalley from second for the walk-off win.
UT Martin had just two hits in the game, an Avary Makarewicz single in the fourth and a Dylan Scott single in the seventh. Screaming Eagle pitcher Josie Newman did her part to keep the Skyhawks from scoring in the contest by striking out 13 batters, while walking just three.
Morea Hodge drew two of UT Martin's three walks in the game, while Dylan Scott had the third. The duo of Hodge and Dylan Scott also accounted for both Skyhawk stolen bases in the game with one each.
The two teams will settle the series Friday at USI Softball Field with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
