
Skyhawks Drop Two at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Southern Indiana Friday at the USI Softball Field in Evansville. The Skyhawks fell 2-0 in game one and 6-2 in game two, giving the Screaming Eagles the three-game series sweep.
In game one, UT Martin outhit Southern Indiana, 8-5, but could not push any of those baserunners across the plate. The Screaming Eagles finally broke up the scoreless tie in the fifth when Kennedy Nally made it 1-0 by scoring on a passed ball. Southern Indiana added an insurance run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Grace Huffman that scored Sydney Long, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Skyhawks had baserunners in each of the final two innings but ended up stranding two in the sixth and two in the seventh, sealing the win for the Screaming Eagles. Kyla Harley and Alli Robinson each had two hits in the game, while Morea Hodge stole a base and was hit by a pitch. Dylan Scott, Avary Makarewicz and Kennedy Brown also tallied hits in the game, while Carly Ward ended game one with a hit and a walk.
Natalie Kreuziger went 4.1 innings in the circle for UT Martin and gave up two runs on three hits with six strikeouts, while Rylee Tittle pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
In game two, Kate Satkoski gave her team the early 2-0 lead with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first. Long then made it 4-0 for USI in the next inning, when she also drove in two runs with a single.
Down 4-0 after two innings, UT Martin went on to cunt its deficit in half over the next two frames. In the third, Robinson drove in Harley with a single after she reached earlier in the inning on a single of her own. In the fourth, Jordyn Hustey cut the lead to 4-2 when she belted one over the center field wall for her second home run of the year.
In the sixth, however, Southern Indiana tacked on two more runs, pushing their lead back out to four at 6-2. In the top of the seventh, the Skyhawks went down in order to give the Screaming Eagles not only the game two win, but the series sweep as well.
Each of UT Martin's six hits in the contest came from a different Skyhawk with Harley, Robinson, Dylan Scott Makarewicz, Hustey and Kennedy Brown all recording hits in the game. Hodge tallied two walks in the contest, while Ward had one and Harley added to her day by stealing a base.
Harley currently has a team-high 21 stolen bases on the season, which is also the second-best total in the OVC. Tittle also had another strong relief outing in the circle for the Skyhawks, allowing no runs on just one hit with one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
The Skyhawks will make the short trip to Southern Illinois Wednesday to take on the Salukis in the non-conference finale for both teams. First pitch from Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale is scheduled for 4 p.m.
