JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Quintin Dove and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. each went off for high-scoring outings today but the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team fell 72-58 at Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State.
Down two starters in the backcourt because of injuries, the Skyhawks (8-19, 4-12 OVC) shot 52 percent from the field but were outscored by 22 points at the three-point and free throw lines. UT Martin, who leads the OVC in free throw percentage, attempted a season-low four free throws and was hampered by 16 turnovers.
Dove tallied a game-high 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting, adding five rebounds in the process. Hawthorne collected 20 points to go along with game-highs of six rebounds and five assists for the Skyhawks, who were officially eliminated from OVC Tournament contention with the setback.
Jacksonville State (12-17, 7-9 OVC) also placed a pair of scorers in double figures as the frontcourt tandem of Jacara Cross (20 points) and Kayne Henry (18 points) led the Gamecocks.
"We fought hard and did what we could do," UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart said. "All I ask of them to give their best and that's what they've done with no pushback."
The Skyhawks opened the game on a 5-0 run after a Hawthorne trifecta and turnaround hook shot by Hannes Polla. A few minutes later, Polla scored four straight points before Jacksonville State took a 16-9 advantage. Miles Thomas converted a tough reverse layup at the 7:35 mark to equal the score at 18-all but the Gamecocks soon took a double-digit lead (31-21). UT Martin trimmed its deficit back down to six but Jacksonville State was able to hold a 36-25 advantage at the break.
Dove paced the Skyhawks with nine first-half points while Henry (18) and Cross (11) both eclipsed double figures in the scoring column in the opening 20 minutes.
The opening bucket of the second half belonged to Dove, who knocked down a mid-range jumper from the right baseline. Hawthorne followed with seven consecutive UT Martin points as the Skyhawks stayed within striking distance. However, the Gamecocks soon expanded their lead out to 18 points and UT Martin could not recover.
The Skyhawks complete the 2019-20 season next week at home, facing OVC rivals SIUE at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 and Southeast Misssouri at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. The latter matchup will serve as Senior Day for UT Martin, who will honor Dove and Hawthorne shortly before tipoff.
