NEW ORLEANS, La. – A marathon men's basketball season opener between the University of Tennessee at Martin and Tulane ended with the Green Wave narrowly outlasting the Skyhawks by a 100-98 margin in double overtime.
In a game that featured 20 ties and 20 lead changes, Tulane made a pair of go-ahead free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining in double overtime. That came after UT Martin led for 25:13 of the contest as this was the Skyhawks' first double overtime decision since Nov. 22, 2023 against North Alabama.
For the first time since Feb. 18, 2023 at Tennessee Tech, UT Martin boasted three scorers with at least 20 points. Davi Remagen posted 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting while Kaan Onat (21 points, game-high 13 rebounds) and Sasha Savkov (20 points, 10 rebounds) each hauled in double-doubles, marking the first time that a pair of Skyhawks had a double-double in the same game since Jan. 15, 2026 at SIUE.
Savkov drained a team-high six 3-pointers as UT Martin sank 17 triples in 37 tries (44.7 percent). The 17 three-pointers are the second-most against a NCAA Division I opponent in school history (only trailing 18 at Southern Indiana on Dec. 21, 2024) and are the third-best single-game performance in program history.
Tulane was led by Krystian Lewis' 40 points as he was 11-for-25 from the floor with a 17-of-18 effort from the charity stripe, including the game-winner in double overtime. TJ Nadeau (15 points), Tyler Ringgold (14), Joah Chappelle (13) and KJ Greene (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Green Wave.
Neither side led by more than one possession until Filip Petkovski splashed a three-pointer with a little under nine minutes to go in the first half, giving the Skyhawks a 20-15 advantage. Tulane briefly reclaimed a lead but Onat converted back-to-back driving layups in the final 41 seconds of the first half to give UT Martin a 37-35 advantage at the break. Onat's 11 points were tied for a game-high at the half with Tulane's Nadeau.
The Green Wave began the second half on a 7-1 run but Remagen went off for 17 of 20 Skyhawk points during a stretch of 5:21, including a pair of rare four-point plays. That helped boost UT Martin's lead out to 66-57 with 9:10 to go in regulation. Tulane chipped away and held a short lead down the stretch before sending the game into overtime after a bucket with nine seconds left in the second half.
The Skyhawks led for a majority of the first overtime but the Green Wave took their first lead in the extra period with 58 seconds remaining. Armandas Bancevicius then made a clutch free throw with six seconds on the clock to knot the score at 91-all and send the contest into double overtime.
Savkov buried a trey to give UT Martin its first lead in double overtime while Onat converted a free throw with five seconds left to even the score at 98-98. Lewis then accounted for the final two points of the evening from the charity stripe.
The Skyhawks continue their three-game road swing to open the 2026-27 season on Saturday, Nov. 7 when they travel to IU Indy. Tipoff from Indianapolis, Ind. is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
