INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite trailing for less than five minutes today, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team dropped another tight result as the Skyhawks were edged out by IU Indy, 75-74.
UT Martin held the lead for 32:36 of clock time and owned a 13-point advantage with under seven minutes to go. The Jaguars then concluded the game on a 22-8 run, capped off by the go-ahead game-winning free throws with 16 seconds remaining.
Davi Remagen topped the Skyhawks (0-2) in scoring for the second straight game, tallying 19 points in his first career start. Vladimir Khryapa chipped in a career-best 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting while adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals for UT Martin, who also saw Filip Petkovski haul in a career-high eight rebounds. The Skyhawks outshot IU Indy 52.8 percent to 37.1 percent while outrebounding the Jaguars 43-25 and holding a 46-20 advantage in points in the paint.
IU Indy (2-0) was led by Gus Etchison's 24 points and game-high three assists while Kameron Tinsley tallied 16 points and a team-best six rebounds.
UT Martin only trailed for 32 seconds in the first half as an early 8-0 Skyhawk run featured a tip-in layup from Arminas Vilkas, a driving layup by Remagen, a dunk from Armandas Bancevicius and a driving layup by Khryapa. With the score knotted at 19-all, Nikola Janicic scored five straight points as UT Martin claimed a 26-19 advantage with seven minutes remaining before the halftime break. However, the Jaguars hit a go-ahead three-pointer with two seconds before the halftime buzzer to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room. Khryapa and Etchison each had game-highs of 12 points for their respective squads.
The Skyhawks trailed by five points after the opening possession of the second half before an old-fashioned three-point play by Kaan Onat at the 15:28 mark gave UT Martin a lead it would not relinquish until under two minutes to go. Ousseynou Sambe was responsible for a pair of dunks and a layup at the rim over a stretch of 2:42 before a Bancevicius layup boosted the Skyhawk advantage out to 64-51. IU Indy used an 8-0 run over 1:19 to reclaim a brief lead but a pair of Remagen free throws with 33 seconds left tilted the score back in UT Martin's favor at 74-33. Etchison then knocked down two attempts from the charity stripe to close the scoring.
The final game of a season-opening road swing will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 10 as the Skyhawks make the short drive to Arkansas State. Tipoff from Jonesboro, Ark. is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
