With just six games left in the season for the University of Tennessee at Martin, the quest for a berth in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship field is becoming tighter by the day. The Skyhawks will look to control their own destiny in a pair of road conference doubleheaders beginning at Jacksonville State on Friday, April 26 followed by a matchup at Tennessee Tech on Sunday, April 28.
The Skyhawks (27-22, 8-8 OVC) sit in a tie for the final spot in the OVC Softball Championship field with just three series to play. With a .500 winning percentage, UT Martin enters the weekend currently tied with Belmont and SIUE for spots 6, 7 and 8 – in no particular order – while Tennessee Tech is just on the outside looking in with an 8-10 mark (.444 winning percentage). A pair of wins could possibly secure a tournament berth.
UT Martin will look to sophomore Paige Clark to stay hot as she leads the team with a .401 batting average – which ranks third in the OVC – while her 30 stolen bases rank 11th nationally. Junior Haylee Short ranks second on the team with a .328 batting average and 11 extra base hits while swiping 18 stolen bases of her own. As a team, the Skyhawks rank ninth nationally with 111 stolen bases.
In the circle, the Skyhawks have relied heavily on the play of freshman Erin Gallagher who leads the team with a 7-3 record and 2.41 ERA in 90.0 innings of work. Gallagher recently recorded her first collegiate shutout against Memphis while pacing the squad with 70 strikeouts on the year. Meanwhile, junior Hannah Ridolfi (7-9, 3.74 ERA) leads the team with 16 starts while Lexi Ray (7-6, 3.04 ERA) and Caitlin Karo (6-4, 3.36 ERA) could also see action over the weekend.
Jacksonville State (30-12, 14-4 OVC) sits in the driver's seat for its fourth league title in the last five years with a two-game lead in the conference standings heading down the final stretch. The Gamecocks are led offensively by Taylor Beshears with a .421 batting average, nine doubles, 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. In the circle, the Gamecocks rely on ace Faith Sims (18-4, 1.79 ERA) while Nicole Rodriguez (7-4, 3.45 ERA) is the team's other primary starter.
Tennessee Tech (18-23, 8-10 OVC) is looking to claw its way into the tournament field, currently sitting two games out of the final spot. The Golden Eagles are led offensively by Beth McCulley with a .353 batting average and nine doubles while Sydney Love-Baker provides the pop with five doubles, 10 home runs and 26 RBIs. Alyssa Arden (11-11, 2.88 ERA) paces the pitching staff while Kayla Hughes (4-5, 5.63 ERA) and Haeli Bryson (3-7, 5.71 ERA) help to carry the load.
