JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team proved to be no match for the Ohio Valley Conference leaders on Friday afternoon, falling on the road at Jacksonville State 3-0 and 5-2 in a doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (27-24, 8-10 OVC) were held hitless in the first game of the afternoon before challenging the Gamecocks in the second game of the twinbill. While UT Martin brought the potential game-tying run up to the plate in the seventh inning of Game 2, the comeback would not be in the cards for the road squad.
Offensively, the pair of Paige Clark and Kenna Garst paced the squad with two hits and a RBI on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Alli Fulcher and Chayse Skinner would also tally base knocks.
In the circle, Lexi Ray (7-7) was credited with the loss in the opener, allowing three earned runs in six innings of work. Erin Gallagher dropped to 7-4 on the season after allowing three earned runs in an inning-plus of action. Caitlin Karo appeared in relief, allowing two runs over five innings.
Game 50: Jacksonville State 3, UT Martin 0
Paired up against arguably the league's best pitch in Faith Sims, the Skyhawks saw their bats become silenced in the first game of the doubleheader. While the Skyhawks had baserunners reach base to lead off the first, second and fifth innings, Faith Sims quickly shutdown any rally attempts en route to her second no-hitter of the season.
With the Skyhawk bats being held hitless, Jacksonville State scored early and never looked back. With winds gusting to left, the Gamecocks scored all three of their runs off home runs – including a solo homer by Karsen Mosley in the first and a two-run shot by Hayley Sims in the second.
Game 51: Jacksonville State 5, UT Martin 2
Much like in Game 1 of the day, Jacksonville State jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. After a strikeout to start the inning, the Gamecocks barreled back-to-back pitches for solo home runs by Mosely – her second of the day – and Alexus Jimmerson.
The threat of the long ball continued in the bottom of the second what the Gamecocks tallied their fifth home run of the afternoon following a solo home run to left by Hayley Sims – her second of the afternoon.
Facing a three-run deficit, the Skyhawks finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Freshman Chelsey Gore battled an eight-pitch at bat before drawing a walk to leadoff the inning. From there Clark would double to left field to score the team's first run before an opposite field single down the right field line by Garst made it a 3-2 contest.
The Gamecocks added a pair of key insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Anna Chisolm to put the game out of reach down the stretch. The Skyhawks would bring the potential tying run up to bat in the seventh but could not push the runs across the board, dropping the decision 5-2.
UT Martin will wrap up the road portion of season with another doubleheader at Tennessee Tech on Sunday, April 28. First pitch from Cookeville is slated for 1 p.m.
