OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team found itself on the wrong side of an 13-run margin on Tuesday evening, falling to No. 17 ranked Ole Miss 13-0 in five innings.
The Skyhawks (25-20) committed a season-high five errors on the day while combating the defensive lapses with just two hits. Gracyn McBride and Haylee Short tallied the team's lone hits on the day, coming off singles in the first and second innings, respectively.
UT Martin would be held hitless from the second inning on, while the second frame proved to be a huge inning for the Ole Miss bats. After scoring one run in the top of the first, the Rebels exploded for eight runs on five hits and three errors in the second inning to put the game out reach early. While the hosts would tack on some extra runs down the stretch, the game ended early in just five innings.
Erin Gallagher (6-3) was credited with the loss after allowing eight runs – two of which were earned – in 1.1 innings of work. Lexi Ray, Caitlin Karo and Hannah Ridolfi appeared in relief, allowing one earned run over the final 2.2 innings.
UT Martin will look to snap its five-game losing streak with an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at SIUE on Friday, Apr. 19.
