EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With the quest for a berth in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship, the University of Tennessee at Martin snapped its losing streak while salvaging an important series split against league rival SIUE on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (25-21, 8-8 OVC) dropped the series opener to push the team's season-long losing streak to six games before an offensive outburst pushed the visitors over the top in Game 2 against the Cougars. With the win, UT Martin sits in a three-way tie for the final spot in the OVC Softball Championship with three conference series to play.
Five different players tallied multi-base hits for the Skyhawks on the afternoon with Alli Fulcher, Kallie Pickens, Kenna Garst, Gracyn McBride and Paige Clark each joining in the action. Posting the biggest afternoon was Fulcher who went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs – including a game-deciding three-run blast in the top of the seventh in Game 2. Clark and McBride combined for the other three RBIs on the afternoon.
Hannah Ridolfi (7-8) posted a nice outing in Game 1 despite being credited with the loss after allowing one earned run in six innings of work. Erin Gallagher started Game 2 and later came back to earn her second save of the season, allowing three earned runs over five innings. Lexi Ray (7-6) appeared in relief, allowing one earned run in two innings to record the victory.
Game 46: SIUE 4, UT Martin 1
SIUE jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the doubleheader. After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, the Cougars capitalized on a fielding error late in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars added to their advantage in the bottom of the second. The Skyhawks would get two quick outs to start the inning but a single by Alana Cobb-Adam was followed by a stolen base and a hit by pitch before the runners later came all the way home to score on another outfield error to score a pair of runs and give the home squad a three-run cushion.
The home squad would chip on an extra run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a four-run margin. The score would remain that way through the top of the seventh. Down to the team's final three outs, the Skyhawks brought the game's potential tying runs to the plate in the seventh but could not push the runs across, falling 4-1.
Game 47: UT Martin 8, SIUE 6
Needing to savage a split in the series, UT Martin jumped out in front in the first inning of Game 2. A fielding error gave the Skyhawks their first baserunner before senior Shelby Woodard drove a double to left center to score Chelsey Gore from second. With Woodard still in scoring position, Fulcher drove a single to left to score her fellow classmate and put the Skyhawks on top 2-0.
The Cougars would cut the margin in half in the bottom of the second on a double to center by Alyssa Heren to make it 2-1. The Skyhawks would waste little time responding in the following half inning however as back-to-back errors spelled trouble for the home team. With a pair of runners on base, McBride tallied an infield single to score Clark before a sacrifice fly by Fulcher later in the inning brought home the team's fourth run.
UT Martin would push its lead out to 5-1 in the contest on a sacrifice fly by Clark to score Pickens in the top of the fourth inning.
With the home squad facing a four-run deficit, the Cougars took their play up a notch in the bottom of the fifth. A single led off the inning before a pair of errors on consecutive at-bats led to two runs coming home to score. The damage would not be done however as Zoe Schafer tallied a RBI double to trim the margin to one before a RBI groundout by Sammie Ofoia completed the comeback attempt and tied the game at 5-5.
The game would remain tied until the seventh inning. Needing a jolt, the Skyhawks turned to their senior who carried a big bat all contest. With a single to lead off the inning followed by a hit by pitch of McBride, Fulcher stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run home run to left field to complete her five-RBI contest and give the Skyhawks an 8-5 lead.
SIUE would score a run in the bottom half of the inning as R. Curtis began the frame with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch, but that would be as close as the Cougars would get down the stretch as Gallagher sealed the door for the save.
UT Martin will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 against Memphis. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
