4/18/2019 12:56:00 PM | Softball
The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to get back to its winning ways with a road doubleheader at Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE on Saturday, April 20. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with Game 2 to follow. Both games are tentatively scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (25-20, 7-7 OVC) opens the home stretch of the season currently in eighth place in the OVC standings. A top-eight finish in the league standings – based off of winning percentage – will secure the Skyhawks a berth in the OVC Softball Championship in May. In order for the squad to reach their 16th tournament appearance under head coach Donley Canary, UT Martin will need to snap a five-game losing streak which has seen the team be outscored 28-4 during the span.
UT Martin will look to get back on track behind leadoff hitter Paige Clark who second in the OVC with a .415 batting average along with eight extra base hits, 20 RBIs and 26 RBIs. Clark has also paced a complete team effort on the base paths, leading the league with 26 stolen bases. As a team, UT Martin has stolen 101 bases which ranks 11th nationally and is the fourth straight 100-steal season for the squad.
SIUE (12-19, 4-6 OVC) is looking to snap a three-game losing streak of its own under first year interim head coach Jessica Jones. Senior Alyssa Heren paces the Cougars in most offensive categories with a .376 batting average, 12 doubles, 12 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Meanwhile, Emily Ingles (5-9, 4.50 ERA) and Corrina Rivas (6-9, 5.89 ERA) are most likely to earn starts inside the circle.
The Cougars maintain an all-time series advantage of 18-13 against the Skyhawks.
