4/11/2019 3:32:00 PM | Softball
The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to get back to its winning ways with an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against league rival Murray State on Friday, April 12. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. Both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (25-17, 7-5 OVC) were shutout in their most recent OVC doubleheader against Southeast Missouri on Wednesday afternoon, falling by final scores of 1-0 and 6-0. UT Martin will look to recover from the matchup by relying on the team's strengths – its outfield production and strong starting pitching.
The outfield trio of Paige Clark, Haylee Short and Aalia Bivens have each recorded batting averages over the .300-plateau. Clark ranks second in the OVC with a .438 batting average while riding a 28-game on-base streak dating back to March 2. Meanwhile, Short has posted a .325 batting average with eight doubles and 22 RBIs while tallying 18 stolen bases. Bivens has recorded a .305 batting average with eight doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs.
The Skyhawk pitching staff features four arms led by junior Hannah Ridolfi (7-6, 3.28 ERA). Freshman Erin Gallagher (6-2, 2.44 ERA), Lexi Ray (6-4, 3.35 ERA) and Caitlin Karo (6-4, 3.50 ERA) have also tallied six wins on the season.
Murray State (18-19, 8-2 OVC) enters Friday's contest currently tied atop the league leaderboard with Southeast Missouri. The Racers are led offensively by Lillie Goetz with a .327 batting average, 12 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBIs. Meanwhile, Madison Culver and Lexi Jones lead the way with five home runs each. Hannah James (9-9, 2.55 ERA) leads the staff while Taylor Makowsky (6-2, 1.70 ERA) has also tallied nine starts out of the rotation.
UT Martin leads the all-time series by a narrow 16-13 advantage. The Skyhawks have won the last three meetings while holding an 8-6 record against the Racers at Bettye Giles Field.
