MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team saw the home portion of its 2019 Ohio Valley Conference schedule get off to a rough start on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of the doubleheader to defending league champion Eastern Kentucky by scores of 4-3 and 9-3.
The Skyhawks (21-14, 3-3 OVC) saw their league record move back to .500 with today's decisions. Serving as bright spots for the Skyhawks was the play of sophomore Paige Clark who tallied a pair of base hits and three RBIs in the twinbill. The pair of Georgia Land and Gracyn McBride also tallied a pair of hits on the day while Haylee Short registered the Skyhawks other RBI.
Game 34: Eastern Kentucky 4, UT Martin 3
Eastern Kentucky (18-11, 5-1 OVC) jumped out to an early lead in the first contest of the day. A RBI single by Melissa Jacobsen scored the game's first run. The Colonels continued to add to their advantage in the second as an error led to two runs scoring in the frame.
With the team trailing by three, Clark tallied her first RBI of the day on a routine groundout to trim the deficit down to two runs in the bottom of the third.
The game would remain at a two-run margin until the top of the fifth when EKU capitalized on good base running while scoring on a sacrifice fly by Emily Corbitt.
UT Martin would threaten in the bottom of the seventh inning despite facing a three-run deficit. Down but not out, the Skyhawks would ultimately load the bases before a fielding error off the bat of Kenna Garst scored a pair of runs to bring the Skyhawks within one run. The Skyhawks would have yet another chance to make a move with the potential game-winning run standing at second but the final out would be recorded to seal the 4-3 decision.
Hannah Ridolfi (5-5) was credited with the loss in the contest. Ridolfi tossed 6.1 innings of work while allowing eight base hits and just two earned runs. Freshman Lexi Ray would also see action, tossing two-thirds of an inning.
Game 35: Eastern Kentucky 9, UT Martin 3
Much like in Game One of the day, Eastern Kentucky wasted little time leaving its imprint on the game. With a pair of runner on board, a single up the middle by Corbitt would be misplayed in the outfield, resulting in two runs to score. The visitors would then add another run in the second with a single.
The margin would later reach five runs before the Skyhawks got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Clark tallied her second hit of the day – a double to right center – to score a pair.
The Skyhawks tallied their final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning following a RBI double by Short. While the run marked the home team's third of the game, the Skyhawks would get no closer before ultimately falling 9-3.
UT Martin will return to action on Sunday, March 31 when playing host to Morehead State. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
