
Skyhawks Fall In OVC Tournament Opener to SIUE

PEORIA, Ill. – The second-seeded University of Tennessee at Martin softball team fell in its opening game of the 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Championship, 3-0, to the No. 3 seed SIUE Thursday at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria, Illinois.
In the first at-bat of the game, Juztyne Torres doubled down the right field line and was scored two batters later on a single through the left side by Ashley Duran. The game held at 1-0 until the fifth, when the Cougars tacked on two insurance runs when Abby Harvell drove in two runs on a single to make it 3-0.
For the Skyhawks, while they were only outhit 6-5 in the game, they could not get hits when they needed them the most. UT Martin scattered five singles across five different players over four innings. Karena Recrosio, Kyla Harley, Kyrsten Brown, Kennedy Brown and Addie Roberts all had hits in the game, while Recrosio and Avary Makarewicz each drew a walk.
SIUE pitcher Avery Arwood proved why she was named OVC Pitcher of the Year in the game by allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts over a complete game shutout. Natalie Kreuziger was solid in a 3.0-inning relief effort for the Skyhawks, giving up just one run on one hit while striking out five.
With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to the elimination bracket in the tournament and will take on the No. 4 seed Lindenwood at approximately at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
