MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team fell in the final game of its 2026 regular season Saturday, 6-1, to Southern Indiana at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.
Despite the loss, the Skyhawks finished the season second in the Ohio Valley Conference, their best finish since 2017 when they also finished second.
The game essentially came down to four hits, as all runs for both teams were scored via the long ball. Southern Indiana entered the game with just two home runs on the season, but that changed Saturday as the Screaming Eagles recorded three.
Kate Satkoski, who had the only two home runs for Southern Indiana before the game, doubled her total as she went yard for two runs in the second and three runs in the fifth. In the third, Lillly Brown picked up her first home run of the season with a solo shot to deep left field.
In the bottom of the fifth, Avary Makarewicz joined the party with her league-best 11th home run of the year to give her 47 RBIs, also a league-high. In the end, the Skyhawks could not get the bats going and fell to the Screaming Eagles, 6-1.
UT Martin will open play at the 2026 OVC Softball Championship at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria, Illinois Thursday at 10 a.m. against one of three possible opponents: third-seeded SIUE, the sixth-seeded Screaming Eagles or seventh-seeded Tennessee Tech. As a reward for finishing second, the Skyhawks will bypass the play-in round and the first round of double-elimination play.
