Skyhawks Sweep USI on Senior Day, Clinch Two Seed in OVC Tournament

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team swept a doubleheader with Southern Indiana Friday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin on Senior Day. The Skyhawks won game one with a walk-off RBI single from Kennedy Brown, 4-3, and got a shutout from Payton Harris in game two for the 1-0 victory.
The win in game one means the Skyhawks are locked into the two-seed in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship in Peoria, Illinois. UT Martin can finish no lower than second place but can still claim at least a share of the regular-season title depending on the outcome of the Eastern Illinois-Tennessee State series. Friday's victories also gave the Skyhawks 20 wins in league play for the first time since 2012.
Game 1 – UT Martin 4, Southern Indiana 3
In the second inning of game two, Kennedy Brown put the Skyhawks on the board when she stole home, followed by an RBI groundout from Jordyn Hustey that scored Carly Ward to make it 2-0. In the fourth, the Screaming Eagles cut the deficit in half on an RBI double for Jordyn Mackey that scored Kate Satkoski from second.
UT Martin tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with a single from Kyrsten Brown that pushed Karena Recrosio across the plate. With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Satkoski tied the game with a single, but the inning ended abruptly when a Screaming Eagle overran second base and was tagged out.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Skyhawks loaded up the bases on a single from Karena Recrosio, a walk by Kyla Harley and a single from Kyrsten Brown. Immediately after her sister's single, Kennedy Brown came up with a single of her own to score Recrosio and give UT Martin the walk-off win.
Both Karena Recrosio and Kyrsten Brown went 3-for-4 in the game to lead the Skyhawks, while Kenndy Brown finished the contest at 2-for-4. Payton Harris got the win for UT Martin in the game, recording the final two outs for her team. Ashtyn Green started the game and gave up one run on five hits with a strikeout over 3.2 innings, while Natalie Kreuziger went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Game 2 – UT Martin 1, Southern Indiana 0
Game two was scoreless for the first five and a half innings until UT Martin finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth. Ava Scott got on base with one out with a double and was then scored two batters later with an infield single from Kyla Harley to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Payton Harris retired the side in order, including recording her sixth strikeout of the game to seal the shutout win for the Skyhawks. Harris pitched all seven innings for UT Martin in the circle and allowed no runs on just two hits, with her six strikeouts in the game, being a career high. In addition to Scott's single, Harley and Kyrsten Brown also recorded hits in the game.
On Saturday, the Skyhawks will look to end the regular season on a high note, as they go for the series sweep against Southern Indiana at 1:30 p.m.
