
Skyhawks Post Back-To-Back Shutouts Over Morehead State Sunday

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team won both games of Sunday's Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Bettye Giles Field by shutting out Morehead State twice, 5-0 in game one and 7-0 in game two.

Game 1 – UT Martin 5, Morehead State 0
The Skyhawks wasted little time scoring, as Kyla Harley hit an infield single in the bottom of the first that scored Karena Recrosio, who led off the inning with a walk. Later in the inning, Harley and Dylan Scott completed a double steal that allowed Scott to score and Harley to go to second, only to score on the play after a Morehead State error.
Avary Makarewicz capped the scoring at 5-0 in the fifth inning with her league-leading ninth home run of the season, which also scored Karena Recrosio, who reached on an error.
Ashtyn Green threw a complete game in which she allowed no runs on just five hits and tied her career-high in strikeouts with seven. Green is now 9-4 on the year with three solo shutouts and one combined shutout.
Ava Scott led UT Martin offensively in the game by going 2-for-3, while Kennedy Brown had a hit, a run and a game-high two stolen bases.
Game 2 – UT Martin 7, Morehead State 0
After three scoreless innings, the Skyhawks finally got on the board in game two in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Carly Ward and a two-RBI single from Kyrsten Brown. Makarewicz pushed the score to 4-0 in the fifth on an RBI single of her own. In the sixth, Kyrsten Brown drove in another run on a single and was later scored by Dylan Scott on a sacrifice bunt. Kennedy Brown also had an RBI single in the inning, to score Teagan Hayes and make it 7-0.
Natalie Kreuziger struck out a career-high 11 batters in game two, while allowing no runs on five hits for her own complete game shutout. The win moved Kreuziger to 6-4 on the year and was her first solo shutout of the season.
Kyrsten Brown, Harley, Makarewicz and Ward all had two hits in the game, with Kyrsten Brown leading the way with three RBIs. Ava Scott and Harley each had a double in game two, while Ward led the team in stolen bases with two.
The Skyhawks will attempt the series sweep of Morehead State when the two teams return to Bettye Giles Field Monday at Noon.
