Skyhawks Host Morehead State as Homestretch of Regular Season Begins

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team begins the final nine games of the regular season this weekend with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Morehead State at Bettye Giles Field in Martin. The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday and a single game Monday, with both days beginning at Noon.
The Sunday doubleheader will be streamed live on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Chris Brinkley and analysis from Eddie Suiter.
About The Skyhawks
The Skyhawks enter the weekend on a four-game win streak after sweeping Western Illinois at home last weekend and taking down Austin Peay Tuesday in Lexington, Tennessee.
Multiple Skyhawks currently lead the OVC in various individual statistical categories. Sami Scholtz currently sports the league's lowest ERA at 2.71, to go along with a 6-4 record, two saves, 55 strikeouts, and an opponent's batting average of .196. Offensively, Carly Ward leads four Skyhawks batting over .300 with the league's best batting average at .398. In the power categories, Makarewicz leads the OVC in home runs and RBIs at eight and 39, respectively, and has the third-highest slugging percentage in the league at .675, to go along with a .367 batting average. On the base paths, Kennedy Brown leads the OVC in stolen bases with 18.
As a team, the Skyhawks are currently batting .286 and have the best ERA in the league at 3.87. They are currently 23rd in the nation in total stolen bases (77) and 30th in stolen bases per game (1.79), both of which also lead the OVC. Additionally, UT Martin ranks 16th in Division I with 15 triples and 21st nationally with 0.35 triples per game. The Skyhawk pitching staff is currently second in the nation in hit batters, striking just six opponents so far this season.

Morehead State is currently 6-29 on the year and 5-13 in the OVC, after taking two out of three games from Tennessee State last weekend at home, but falling in both games of a doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky Wednesday.
As a team, Morehead State hits .274 on the season, while opponents hit .351 against them. Maddy Christopher currently leads the Eagles at the plate with a .396 average, while Noemye Letendre follows at 3.73. Letendre also leads Morehead State in RBIs and home runs at 24 and five, respectively.

Sunday will be the Skyhawks' annual Alzheimer's Awareness game in partnership with ALZ Together, a national collegiate sports initiative that raises funds and awareness for Alzheimer's and all other dementias. Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday will be Wesley Brown, the chair of the Jackson Walk To End ALZ.

The Skyhawks got some help from Southeast Missouri last weekend, who took two out of three games from league leaders Eastern Illinois. With the Panthers' series loss and UT Martin's sweep of Western Illinois, the Skyhawks are currently in sole possession of second place in the OVC standings, just one game back from Eastern Illinois and 2.5 games clear of third-place Tennessee Tech.
With one win over Morehead State this weekend, the Skyhawks can officially clinch one of eight spots in next month's OVC Softball Championship at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria, Illinois.
