EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to SIUE Sunday at Cougar Field in Edwardsville in the regular-season finale for both teams. SIUE topped the Skyhawks, 4-0, in game one, followed by a 6-5, 11-inning win over UT Martin in game two.
In game one, the Cougars scored four runs on seven hits, while blanking the Skyhawks and limiting them to just three hits. Emma Henderson earned the shutout for SIUE, striking out six and issuing just three walks. The three hits for UT Martin were spread out over three different Skyhawks, with Kyla Harley, Jordyn Hustey and Kyla Harley all recording singles in the contest.
In game two, the Skyhawks fell behind early, trailing the Cougars, 4-1, after the first two innings. However, after scoring two runs each in the third and fourth innings, UT Martin led the game, 5-4. The Cougars tied the game an inning later in the bottom of the fifth, and from that point, neither team scored until the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and runners on second third, Henderson served up heroics on the other side of the plate by blasting an infield single that scored the runner from third for the 6-5 win.
Avary Makarewicz led UT Martin in the contest by going 2-for-4 with a run, a walk, two RBIs and a home run. Alli Robinson was 1-for-2 with an RBI in game two, while Krysten Brown and Ava Scott each tallied two hits.
On Wednesday, the Skyhawks will open play in the 2025 Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria, Illinois. UT Martin, the eighth seed, will take on fifth-seeded Lindenwood in the first round at 12:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, while the loser will be eliminated.
