MARTIN, Tenn. – After a highly successful trial run of exhibitions last season while awaiting NCAA certification, the University of Tennessee at Martin STUNT team is ready for a 2024 season which features 10 games.
STUNT was announced as the Skyhawks' newest athletic program in June 2021 but NCAA legislation wasn't approved as an emerging sport at the Division I level until January 2024. UT Martin became the first program in the state of Tennessee to compete when it posted a 6-2 record in an eight-game exhibition schedule last spring.
Coached by Amber Minton and assistant Mindy Halverson, the Skyhawks open the first official STUNT season in school history in a little over a month when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Davenport and Central Arkansas on Sunday, March 3.
UT Martin then hosts a tournament at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, March 9 through Sunday, March 10. A total of seven games per day will take place as the Skyhawks play Southern Arkansas (1 p.m.) and Kentucky (3:30 p.m.) on Saturday before squaring off against Fontbonne (1:30 p.m.) and Missouri Baptist (4 p.m.) on Sunday.
The 2024 regular season schedule wraps up with four games over a two-day span in Nashville, Tenn. UT Martin is matched up against California Baptist and Concordia Irvine on Friday, March 15 before competing against Central Arkansas and Maryville on Saturday, March 16.
The Division I national championships are set for April 12 through 15 at a location that will be announced at a later date.
Created by USA Cheer, STUNT is a discipline of competitive cheerleading that removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer. STUNT features two teams in a head-to-head four-quarter competition in a 45-60 minute event that is scored based on execution. Quarters of a STUNT game include partner stunts, pyramids/tosses, jumps/tumbling and a team compulsory routine. A total of 61 colleges or universities currently sponsor the sport of STUNT.
