The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team returns to action this weekend when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech for a three-game series beginning on Friday, Apr. 7 and wrapping up on Saturday, Apr. 8. Friday's contest will start at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at noon and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Skyhawks (12-17, 5-6 OVC) return home after playing their last four games on the road. During the road trip, the squad went 1-3 after dropping the OVC series to Southern Indiana before pushing SEC foe Ole Miss to the brink despite ultimately falling 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
UT Martin's top offensive player is Kaci Fuller who ranks amongst the nation's leaders with a .478 batting average while also boasting six doubles, six home runs and 25 RBIs on the year. During OVC play, graduate infielder Kaitlyn Kelley has boasted a hot bat with a .382 batting average, five doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs to pace the squad. Trailing close behind is Katie Dreiling with a .379 batting average against league foes while also adding two home runs and four RBIs.
The Skyhawk pitching staff is anchored by junior Brooklynn Linneman with a 5-5 record while boasting a 2.38 ERA in 70.2 innings of work. Linneman posted her third shutout of the season last weekend while leading the team with 12 starts. Dreiling has also been strong in the circle where she enters the weekend with a 6-5 record and 3.52 ERA in 53.2 innings of work.
Tennessee Tech (3-31, 0-9 OVC) is in a year of transition in its first season under the direction of head coach Danielle Penner. The Golden Eagles are looking to snap an 11-game losing streak – including a 0-9 stretch to start league play. TTU has been swept in its first three OVC series by Morehead State, Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri. The squad has struggled especially in the circle where they have allowed opponents to average nine runs per game and a .377 batting average.
Haeli Bryson leads the Golden Eagles in most offensive categories with a .298 batting average, seven doubles and 21 RBIs on the campaign. In the circle, Callie Piper (2-14, 8.04 ERA) leads the team with 74.0 innings.
The two squads have met 86 times in series history with Tennessee Tech holding a 47-39 advantage. UT Martin has held the upper hand recently however, winning 13 of the last 14 meetings.
