The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team opens Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when playing host to Eastern Illinois for a three-game series. Action begins with a doubleheader on Friday, March 10 beginning at 1 pm with Game 2 to follow while the series will wrap up on Saturday, March 11 at noon.
UT Martin (6-8, 0-0 OVC) opens conference action as the preseason favorite to compete for a league championship. The Skyhawks earned 11 of 18 first place votes while claiming 119 points overall to be named the preseason favorite for the first time in program history. UT Martin (6-8, 0-0 OVC) opens league play leading the OVC in batting average (.329), on-base percentage (.397), slugging percentage (.516) and fielding percentage (.987) while sitting second in home runs (17).
Graduate infielder Kallie Pickens was tabbed as the team's OVC Player to Watch this preseason and has lived up to the hype through the early portion of the schedule. Pickens ranks third on the team with a .364 batting average while tallying one double, two home runs and nine RBIs. In her recent six-game hitting streak, she has seen her batting average climb 156 points including a stretch in which she has tallied two home runs and seven RBIs in her last three games.
Another top offensive contributor is junior outfielder Kaci Fuller who ranks in the top-25 nationally in seven categories. Fuller ranks second nationally in batting average (.596) while sitting fifth in on-base percentage (.625) and slugging percentage (1.077) along with ranking seventh in home runs per game (0.43) and RBIs per game (1.43).
The pitching staff has three players which have each started three games or more this season. Brooklynn Linneman (2-2) leads the team with 28.0 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .208 batting average. Meanwhile, Kiersten Nixon (0-2, 3.71 ERA) and Katie Dreiling (3-3, 5.53 ERA) have also logged 48.0 combined innings.
Eastern Illinois (10-9, 0-0 OVC) opens league play ranking second in overall batting average (.300) while leading the OVC ranks in doubles (32), home runs (22), RBIs (85) and stolen bases (25). Rachel Kaufman paces the Panthers with a .373 batting average while tallying two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs. Meanwhile, Lindy Milkowski has earned a pair of OVC Player of the Week honors while boasting a .339 batting average with five doubles, eight home runs (seventh nationally) and 20 RBIs. In the pitching circle, Rachel Kaufman (2-2, 2.69 ERA) and Olivia Price (3-2, 2.83 ERA) both feature sub-three ERAs while Alexa Rehmeier (3-2, 3.53 ERA leads the team with 35.2 innings of work.
The two programs have met 78 times previously with Eastern Illinois holding a 43-35 series advantage. The Skyhawks have won the last four meetings against the Panthers while boasting a 4-1 mark under the direction of head coach Brian Dunn.
