3/6/2023 3:33:00 PM | Softball
The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will make its long-anticipated home debut on Tuesday, March 7 when playing host to Division III foe Rhodes College. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin opens a four-game homestand with a non-conference matchup against first-time opponent Rhodes College on Tuesday afternoon. The Skyhawks are coming off a strong stretch in which the team has won four of their last five contests. Most recently, the squad went 2-1 in the Saluki Invitational with wins over Butler and Loyola while falling just short in extra innings to Southern Illinois.
The Skyhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference in both batting average (.314), on-base percentage (.380) and fielding percentage (.986) while sitting second in both home runs (12) and slugging percentage (.468).
Individually, junior Kaci Fuller has already claimed two OVC Player of the Week honors while ranking second nationally with a .571 batting average along sitting seventh in the NCAA in slugging percentage (1.020) and eighth in on-base percentage (.604). Meanwhile, she also leads the team with five doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs through the first 13 games.
The Skyhawks have five players hitting over .300 on the season with Fuller leading the way while junior catcher Maddi Long ranks second on the squad with a .370 batting average. Fellow junior Avry Blume has also been strong this season, boasting four doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs to rank amongst team leaders.
Newcomer Brooklynn Linneman (1-2, 3.23 ERA) leads the team in ERA, complete games (three), innings pitched (26.0) and strikeouts (20) in the circle. Junior Emily Brown could also see some action in relief after appearing in five contests this season.
Rhodes College enters the contest with a 6-11 overall mark out of the Division III ranks. The Lynx are led by freshman Harper Allee-Press who paces the team in most statistical categories including batting average (.500), doubles (seven), RBIs (nine) and stolen bases (six). In the pitching circle, Gina Dudley (3-5, 3.92 ERA) leads the way with 40 strikeouts in 39.1 innings of work.
