
UT MARTIN SOCCER OPENS SEASON BY HOSTING SEC FOE KENTUCKY ON SUNDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will officially kickoff the 2022 season on Sunday, Aug. 21 when playing host to Southeastern Conference foe Kentucky at Skyhawk Field. First touch is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks open their 25th season in program history and have won five Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2021. During the team's most recent championship campaign last season, UT Martin posted an 11-6-1 overall record while going 6-2 in league action.
UT Martin and Kentucky have met one time previously in series history. The two programs squared off in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament with Kentucky finding the winning goal in the 93rd minute to pull out a 1-0 overtime victory.
The Skyhawks split their two preseason matchups against Memphis (L, 3-0) and Arkansas State (1-0). UT Martin returns several starters from last season's championship squad including team captains Maria Castaldo and Catey Hunt along with All-OVC honorees Makayla Robinson and Izzy Patterson to the starting lineup.
This season marks the 13th campaign under the direction of three-time OVC Coach of the Year Phil McNamara. During his tenure with the Skyhawks, the squad has won four league championships and two OVC tournament crowns while posting a 115-91-22 overall mark.
Kentucky (1-0) enters its debut season under head coach Troy Fabiano and opened the era with a 3-0 win over Ball State on Thursday evening. The Wildcats received goals from the trio of two-time All-SEC honoree Jordyn Rhodes, Hadley Williams and Madison Jones while Tallulah Miller recorded a shutout between the posts. Rhodes returns as the Wildcats top offensive threat with 30 career goals while leading the team in 2021 in several categories including goals (11), assists (five), points (27), shots (62) and shots on goal (29).
