BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Redshirt freshman Ava Huntrods of the University of Tennessee Martin has been named as the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, the league announced Tuesday as part of its postseason awards. In addition, Peyton Cook, Parker Gelinas and Mac Titus were named to the All-Conference second team, while Alexandra Weihs was named to the All-Newcomer team. The five players honored by the OVC are the most for the Skyhawks since the 2021 season.
Huntrods is just the fourth Skyhawk to be named Freshman of the Year and the first since 2021, when Gelinas received the award. Despite missing the first part of the season due to injury, the London, England native returned to the line-up and made an immediate impact. She finished the season with one goal and three assists, including two assists in the regular-season finale against SIUE. In addition to being named Freshman of the Year, Huntrods was also named to the All-Newcomer team
Cook had an outstanding season, with her six goals ranking second in the OVC in conference play this season. The junior also had three assists and took 42 shots, with 27 going on frame. In the final week of the season, she became the first Skyhawks since 2021 to earn OVC Offensive Player of the Week when she scored two goals and had an assist against SIUE.
Gelinas caps an amazing career with UT Martin by earning her third All-OVC nod in five seasons. The Germantown, Tennessee native led a back line that allowed just 0.83 goals per game and never let her team lose a match by more than one goal. This season, she was named as OVC Defender of the Week on three separate occasions.
In just two seasons with the Skyhawks, Titus will go down as one of the most efficient goalies in UT Martin history. This season, the Chelsea, Alabama native posted a goals against average of 0.76, which is the second-lowest single-season average in program history and lowest overall since 2008. For her career, she ranks in the top ten in minutes played, saves, goals against average, wins and shutouts. In 2023, she was named as OVC Goalkeeper of the Week twice.
Weihs proved to be a player on the rise over the course of the season. She had one assist against Lindenwood and scored her first collegiate goal against SIUE. The Malmo, Sweden native took 37 shots on the season, with 20 going on goal.
As a team, the Skyhawks now turn their attention to the 2025 OVC Women's Soccer Championship. The Skyhawks will play their first match of the tournament Thursday at 3 p.m. at Lindenwood, as the sixth seed, in a rematch with SIUE, the seventh seed. The winner of the match will take on third-seeded Lindenwood Sunday at 1 p.m.
