MARTIN, Tenn. – A season-opening two-match homestand for the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer program will take place this week, as the 2019 campaign officially begins with a pair of matchups against Sun Belt Conference opponents. The Skyhawks will take on Arkansas State on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. before wrapping up their brief home stretch with a tilt against Little Rock on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.
All-time, UT Martin is 7-4-1 against Arkansas State, holding a 4-1 edge in matches played at Skyhawk Field. The Skyhawks are 4-3-1 all-time against Little Rock with a 3-1 home mark in the series.
UT Martin enters the season with an undefeated exhibition slate as the Skyhawks played to a 1-1 draw with North Alabama on Aug. 11 before defeating Christian Brothers by a 2-1 margin on Aug. 18. The UT Martin offense outshot its opposition by a 36-15 margin, placing exactly half of its attempts on goal.
Redshirt sophomore forward Jill Hildreth led the Skyhawks with a pair of goals while Isabel Almarsdottir (one goal), Jacalyn Schubring (assist) and Lotte Koot (assist) also recorded points in the preseason. Defensively, Erica Myers corralled six saves in the two matches as the UT Martin defense conceded just eight shots on goal.
Skyhawk head coach Phil McNamara returns 14 players from last season's squad who shattered the program record with 15 victories and earned the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. Nicole Collins and Alice Adams return as starting forwards as that duo has combined for 12 goals and nine assists in their careers. Defensive starters include Kamryn Chappell and Schubring on the back line in front of Myers, who was tabbed as a "Player to Watch" by the OVC after an all-conference mention last fall.
Arkansas State is coming off an 8-7-3 overall record in 2018, including a 2-0 win against UT Martin in the season opener in Jonesboro. The Red Wolves return eight starters, including United States Coaches All-Southeast Region honoree Sarah Sodoma (team-high five goals last fall) and All-Sun Belt Conference second teamer Maggie Ertl (four goals, seven assists in 2018). In its lone exhibition match, Arkansas State posted a 3-0 road victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff which featured a pair of goals from Sodoma and another score from Haley Husted. In goal, Megan McClure and Noel Miller combined for the shutout by making one save apiece for the Red Wolves, who were voted sixth in the SBC preseason poll.
Little Rock cruised to a 13-5-4 mark in 2018, capturing its first-ever SBC championship and making an NCAA Tournament appearance in the process. The Trojans were selected third in the SBC preseason standings as reigning all-conference first teamers Doro Greulich (four goals, seven assists in 2018) and Fanney Einarsdottir (four goals, one assist last season) pace six starters off last year's squad. Little Rock had one preseason tuneup, a 3-1 road setback at Northwestern State on Saturday. Freshman Mari Young was responsible for the Trojan goal in the exhibition, striking in the 71st minute. Returning starting goalkeeper Sara Johannsdottir (0.92 Goals Against Average, nine shutouts in 2018) did not allow a goal in just over 29 minutes of playing time in net.
