MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team netted a pair of early goals today on its way to a 2-1 exhibition victory over Christian Brothers at Skyhawk Field.
UT Martin outshot the visitors by a 24-7 margin, as 13 different Skyhawks reeled off a shot attempt this afternoon. For the second straight match, redshirt sophomore Jill Hildreth found the back of the net while freshman Isabel Almarsdottir netted the eventual game-winning goal for UT Martin.
All 22 student-athletes saw playing time today for the Skyhawks, who battled a stifling heat index that reached the mid-100's throughout the match.
"It was a good overall stretch of fitness for us on a very warm day," UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara said. "We saw a glimpse of a very good team in the first half – I thought we were good with structure, shape, intensity and speed of play. We were somewhat of an average team in the second half. We still have some work to be done but we are encouraged by the strong performances of our newcomers."

Hildreth opened up the scoring with a beautiful strike in the 14th minute, taking a feed from Jacalyn Schubring and burying it for a 1-0 Skyhawk advantage.
A little over six minutes later, Almarsdottir shook her defender 1-on-1 and fired a low liner past the diving Christian Brothers goalkeeper to extend UT Martin's lead to 2-0. Fellow freshman Lotte Koot was credited with an assist.
The Lady Bucs would trim their deficit in half with a goal in the 30th minute but that would be the only shot attempt of the first stanza for Christian Brothers.
Reining All-Ohio Valley Conference goalkeeper Erica Myers shut out the Lady Bucs in the second half, corralling all three of her saves in her a span of 5:24 to ensure the Skyhawk victory.
UT Martin officially begins its 22nd season of collegiate soccer this Thursday, Aug. 22 when it takes on the Arkansas State Red Wolves. The match will start at 7 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
