CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team picked up a big road sweep at Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-2 and 6-3.
The Skyhawks (25-15, 7-3 OVC) saw sophomore Paige Clark extend her on-base streak to 26 games by going 4-for-5 on the day with three runs scored, a pair of triples, three walks and two stolen bases. Also tallying multi-hit contests were Chelsey Gore, Aalia Bivens, Kallie Pickens and Gracyn McBride. Doing the bulk of the damage was McBride along with Haylee Short who both recorded three RBIs on the afternoon.
In the pitching circle four different Skyhawks saw action, compiling a team ERA of 1.40 on the afternoon. Erin Gallagher earned the start in Game 1, allowing one earned run in four innings of work while Caitlin Karo (6-4) appeared in relief, pitching four shutout innings en route to a victory. Hannah Ridolfi (7-5) earned a win Game 2, allowing two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work while Lexi Ray earned a save, striking out both batters she faced.
Game 39: UT Martin 3, Eastern Illinois 2 (Eight innings)
UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the day as Clark quickly extended her hitting streak to 15 games – tying for the second longest in program history – with a leadoff triple. She was rewarded by scampering the final 60 feet on a RBI groundout by Kenna Garst.
Eastern Illinois would immediately answer in the bottom of the first as Megan Burton doubled to right center to start the frame. She later came around to score after swiping third base and coming home on a throwing error. The Panthers added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Burton to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Skyhawk tied the game up in the top of the fifth inning. Pickens tallied a two-out double to continue the inning before coming home to score on a single to left by Clark.
The game would remain tied until the top of the eighth when Clark laced an opposite field triple to start the frame. With the go-ahead run at third, McBride drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to left.
Game 40: UT Martin 6, Eastern Illinois 3
The game would remain tied in the second half of the doubleheader until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with a bunt single RBI by Morgan Lamore to score Denaed Santini on the play.
Down by one in the top of the seventh, the Skyhawks fought back. UT Martin would load the bases after a hit by pitch with one out. With a prime scoring opportunity at hand, McBride single to center to score a pair and take a 2-1 advantage. Another hit by pitch would load the bases again for Short who cleared the bases with a three-run double. UT Martin scored its final run of the inning with a single down the left field line by Georgia Land to make it a 6-1 contest.
Eastern Illinois cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run by Mia Davis, but the Skyhawks would hold on down the stretch to secure the 6-3 victory.
