RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin struck first on the scoreboard today but the Eastern Kentucky bats stayed hot as the Skyhawks fell 14-4 at Earle Combs Stadium.
The Skyhawks (8-14, 2-6 Ohio Valley Conference) were within striking distance after sophomore Ethan Whitley crushed a two-run homer to make the score 7-4 after the top of the sixth. However, the host Colonels scored seven unanswered runs to close out the contest.
Blake Daniels pieced together his fifth multi-hit game of the season today while Whitley's two RBI's paced UT Martin. Blake Davis also reached base safely twice while adding an RBI and a run scored for the Skyhawks.
On the mound, Austen Bullington (1-4) was credited with the loss after allowing six runs over four innings. The freshman duo of Marcus Eusebio and Seth Petry also tossed two innings apiece out of the UT Martin bullpen this afternoon.
The Skyhawks loaded the bases in the top of the first and pushed across a run thanks to a Davis sacrifice fly that plated Sean Dixson.
Bullington followed with a clean first inning but Eastern Kentucky tacked on four runs in the bottom of the second. UT Martin trimmed its deficit after a two-out rally in the top of the third as Jordan Stoner scored on an error to make the score 4-2.
After Bullington retired the side in order on only nine pitches in the third, the Colonels (13-10, 2-3 OVC) scored twice in the fourth before adding another run in the fifth.
The Skyhawks got back in the game in the top of the sixth, as Davis laced a one-out double into the gap in right center. Three pitches later, Whitley launched a longball beyond the wall in left field for his first round-tripper of the season.
However, Eastern Kentucky scored five runs in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh. UT Martin would get two runners aboard the basepaths in the seventh and also drew a leadoff walk in the eighth but were kept off the scoreboard for the duration of the game.
The Skyhawks will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 24 when they play the final game of the series against the Colonels. First pitch from Richmond, Ky. is set for noon CST.
