GREENSBORO, N.C.- Following one of the greatest single seasons in University of Tennessee at Martin baseball history, outfielder TJ Grines was named to the elite All-Southeast Region Second Team as voted on by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Â
The Alexandria, La. native becomes the first Skyhawk to collect ABCA All-Southeast Region accolades after he was selected from a group that featured student-athletes from 39 schools including power four conference representatives Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
Â
During his senior campaign, Grines was named the program's first Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year while becoming just the third NCAA Division I college baseball player to notch 50 or more RBI's and 50 or more stolen bases in a single season since 2002. His 66 stolen bases still lead the country and are the most in the sport since 2007.
Â
Along with leading the nation in stolen bases at the conclusion of the regular season, he ranked second in hits (92), third in hits per game (1.70), fifth in runs per game (1.37), sixth in runs scored (74), 10th in doubles (21), 20th in total bases (149) and 22nd in batting average (.388).
Â
He set new program single-season records in stolen bases, runs scored (75, previous record had stood for 41 years) and total bases (150) while becoming the first UT Martin student-athlete to boast 20+ doubles and 10+ home runs since 2011 MLB draft pick Trey Karlen accomplished that feat in 2010.
Â
Grines is one of eight OVC representatives selected to the All-Region teams.
