RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team held a lead in the middle innings today but Eastern Kentucky scored in six separate innings to take the final game of the Ohio Valley Conference series, 8-5.
Four of the six Skyhawk hits today went for extra bases, as Sean Dixson roped a pair of doubles to go along with a pair of RBI's out of the leadoff spot. Creighton Eldridge also muscled up for a pair of extra-base hits, delivering a double and the first home run of his senior campaign.
David Hussey was UT Martin's starting pitcher today but received a no-decision after allowing four runs in three innings. Winston Cannon and Nick Wohlbold combined to allow just two earned runs over the final five frames but Cannon (2-5) was saddled with the loss. Wohlbold displayed electric stuff to close out the game, as he generated seven strikeouts while allowing no earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
For the third straight game in the series, the Skyhawks (8-15, 2-7) scored in the top of the first inning. Dixson began the contest with a double down the left field line and was followed by a Blake Daniels walk. After Jordan Stoner singled to load the bases, Dixson was erased on a fielder's choice. Daniels would later scamper home on a wild pitch while Stoner scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of Blake Davis to push UT Martin's lead out to 2-0.
Eastern Kentucky (14-10, 3-3 OVC) answered with two runs in the first and two runs in the second. Hussey kept the Colonels off the scoreboard in the third with a 10-pitch perfect frame.
The Skyhawks used some two-out momentum to take the lead after the top of the fourth. Eldridge cranked a solo homer beyond the right field wall to make the score 4-3. Noah Thigpen then singled and Tyson Cox reached on an error to set up Dixson, who went opposite field with a two-run double that resulted in a 5-4 UT Martin advantage.
Eastern Kentucky evened the score in the bottom half of the fourth before scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the fifth. The Colonels added another run in the sixth before Wohlbold was summoned out of the bullpen. The sophomore righty from Columbia, Mo. limited the damage by striking out a pair of batters and stranding two runners on the basepaths in the process.
Eastern Kentucky scored an unearned run in the seventh on a two-out error to extend its lead to 8-5. The Skyhawks had ample opportunities to cut into their deficit but UT Martin could not solve the Colonel bullpen. Darren Williams and Aaron Ochsenbein earned the win and save, respectively, by not conceding a single baserunner over the final five innings.
UT Martin opens a four-game homestand on Wednesday, March 27 when it hosts in-state Division II rival Union. First pitch from Skyhawk Field is set for 6 p.m.
