
UT MARTIN SOFTBALL TO TRAVEL TO ALABAMA STATE BLACK AND GOLD TOURNAMENT

The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will hit the road for the second straight weekend with a tournament appearance at the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 15 and running through Sunday, Feb. 17.
UT Martin will open the tournament against Alabama A&M on Friday with first pitch scheduled for noon before squaring off against Western Carolina at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks will return to action against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. before a matchup against North Alabama at noon. The squad will wrap up the tournament action against host Alabama State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
The Skyhawks (3-2) return to action after a solid start to the regular season, picking up wins against Winthrop, Saint Francis and Savannah State to begin the season. With a squad of fresh faces, all 11 newcomers made their season debut on the opening day of the season. The offense would post a .260 batting average while scoring 27 runs while the defense recorded just three errors over the weekend.
UT Martin has five players hit over .300 on the weekend including Madelyn Dycus (.667, Kenna Garst (.500), Haylee Short (.400), Alli Fulcher (.357) and Paige Clark (.333). Senior Gracyn McBride tallied the team's lone home run on the weekend – a grand slam in the season opener - while leading the way with five RBIs. Fulcher also posted a strong start to her senior campaign with four doubles and four RBIs while slugging .643 in five starts.
In the pitching circle every starter earned a win in the Bash in the Boro. Caitlin Karo posted a 1-0 record with a 2.33 ERA in nine innings of work while Lexi Ray and Hannah Ridolfi also notched victories. Freshman Erin Gallagher proved to be effective out of the bullpen, striking out four in five shutout innings over three games.
This marks the Skyhawks third consecutive appearance and fourth overall in the Black and Gold Tournament. Overall, the Skyhawks are 8-4 in the tournament while boasting an all-time record of 18-10-1 against the field's opponents – Alabama A&M (1-0), Western Carolina (1-0), North Alabama (7-8-1), Purdue Fort Wayne (5-1) and Alabama State (4-1).
