MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team heads to the Henderson County Sports Complex in Lexington, Tennessee Tuesday to face former Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay at 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday will mark the third game that the Skyhawks have played at the Henderson County Sports Complex. UT Martin first played in Lexington in 2022, falling to Mississippi State, 3-2, and again in 2023, picking up an 11-9 win over Memphis.
About The Skyhawks
The Skyhawks are coming off a three-game sweep of Western Illinois, their third OVC series sweep of the season. UT Martin dramatically completed the sweep Sunday with an eight-inning, walk-off win over the Leathernecks thanks to a bases-loaded, RBI-single from Avary Makarewicz. The eight extra-inning games the Skyhawks have played so far this season are the most since 2009, when they played 11. UT Martin is now 4-4 on the year in games going beyond seven innings.
Multiple Skyhawks currently lead the OVC in various individual statistical categories. Sami Scholtz currently sports the league's lowest ERA at 2.73, to go along with a 6-4 record, two saves, 55 strikeouts, and an opponent's batting average of .196. Offensively, Carly Ward leads four Skyhawks batting over .300 with the league's best batting average at .400. In the power categories, Makarewicz leads the OVC in home runs and RBIs at eight and 39, respectively, and has the third-highest slugging percentage in the league at .692, to go along with a 3.76 batting average. On the base paths, Kennedy Brown leads the OVC in stolen bases with 19.
As a team, the Skyhawks are currently batting .285 and have the best ERA in the league at 3.92. They are currently 20th in the nation in total stolen bases (77) and 28th in stolen bases per game (1.83), both of which also lead the OVC. Additionally, UT Martin ranks 15th in Division I with 15 triples and 19th nationally with 0.36 triples per game. The Skyhawk pitching staff is currently second in the nation in hit batters, striking just five opponents so far this season.
About The Govs
Austin Peay is currently 26-17 on the year and 8-7 in the ASUN, after taking two out of three games from Lipscomb in a conference series over the weekend. The two teams have played four common opponents this season: Middle Tennessee, Murray State, North Alabama and West Georgia. In those games, the Govs are 4-3, while the Skyhawks are 2-4. Austin Peay has also won games over OVC opponents Southern Indiana and Tennessee Tech this season, both of whom UT Martin has yet to play.
As a team, Austin Peay hits .309 on the season, while opponents hit .275 against them. Sammi Shelander currently leads the Govs at the plate with a .411 batting average, to go along with 40 RBIs, while Brie Howard leads in RBIs with 60, which is the 11th highest total in the nation, and a batting average of .366. Austin Peay is currently 22nd in Division I in home runs with 63, with Howard leading the way with 18 and Katie Raper and Shelander following at 14 and 10, respectively.
In the circle, the Govs have a team ERA of 3.87, a WHIP of 1.52, an average of 3.44 strikeouts per seven innings, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.17. Alanah Jones has served as the ace for Austin Peay this season and is 15-8 on the year with a team-low ERA of 2.95, a team-high 90 strikeouts and an opponent's batting average of .232. Meanwhile, Cameron Grayson is 9-6 with an ERA of 4.25, 28 strikeouts and an opponent's batting average of .297.
The Series With Austin Peay
One of the oldest series in UT Martin program history, the Skyhawks lead the Govs 73-36 all-time. Tuesday will be the first meeting between the two teams since Austin Peay left the OVC following the 2022 season. The two teams have met at a neutral site just twice, with each team winning one game.
The Race To Peoria
The Skyhawks got some help from Southeast Missouri over the weekend, who took two out of three games from league leaders Eastern Illinois. With the Panthers' series loss and UT Martin's sweep of Western Illinois, the Skyhawks are currently in sole possession of second place in the OVC standings, just one game back from Eastern Illinois and 2.5 games clear of third-place Tennessee Tech.
With one win over Morehead State this weekend at Bettye Giles Field, the Skyhawks can officially clinch one of eight spots in next month's OVC Softball Championship at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria, Illinois.
