SAINT CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team rallied from an early deficit and took a late lead, only to fall to Lindenwood in extra innings by dropping an 8-7 eight-inning decision to the Lions in the series finale, Sunday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in Saint Charles.
The Lions were on the board first, scoring two runs on a Tori Hatton single and a Kylee Crowder double in the opening stanza. In the third, Emily Geary made it 4-0 when she hit a two-run bomb over the right field wall.
The score remained 4-0 until the Skyhawks started manufacturing runs in the fifth. Kyla Harley and Karena Recrosio kicked things off with a single and a double, respectively, setting up Kennedy Brown to bring Harley's pinch runner, Teagan Hayes, home on a fielder's choice. Carly Ward then brought Karena Recrosio home on a single, followed by a wild pitch that allowed Kennedy Brown to score.
Later in the inning, Ava Scott reached on an error by Lindenwood, allowing Ward to score, while Gia Recrosio used a single to plate Avary Makarewicz, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. Jordyn Hustey capped the scoring at six in the inning, when she hit a double that scored Ava Scott.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions took back the lead, 7-6, on a two-RBI double from Madisen Noll and a RBI-single from Anna Sanders. However, the Skyhawks tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out triple from Hustey that scored pinch runner Ashtyn Green. Sami Scholtz then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, the Skyhawks got singles from Kennedy Brown and Ward, but were unable to bring them home. In the bottom half of the frame, Scholtz retired the first two batters, but a UT Martin error and a walk set up Sanders to double down the right field line to score Teryn Brown for the walk-off win.
Hustey finished the game at 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, while Gia Recrosio was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Ward had two hits in the game with a run and a RBI, while Karena Recrosio also had two hits, a run, an RBI and a double.
On Wednesday, the Skyhawks will travel to an SEC opponent for the second consecutive week, taking on Missouri at Mizzou Softball Field in Columbia at 3:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
