
Skyhawks Fall To SIUE In Extras In Game One, Shutout Cougars in Game Two

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with SIUE Saturday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin. The Cougars edged the Skyhawks in eight innings in game one, 5-3, but UT Martin bounced back in game two with an 8-0, five-inning win.
Game 1 – SIUE 5, UT Martin 3 (8 Inn.)
In game one, SIUE was first on the board in the first when Reagan Duncan doubled to left center to score two runs and give her team the early lead. However, in the bottom of the inning, Avary Makarewicz scored Kyla Harley from first base on a triple to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Cougars tacked on another run when Duncan singled down the right field line to score the runner from second. In the bottom of the sixth, with the bases loaded, Kennedy Brown hit the ball to the shortstop, who threw at home for the play at the plate, but Carly Ward was called safe to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Harley scored on a sacrifice fly from Jordyn Hustey to tie the game it three.
Neither team scored in the seventh, but the Cougars drove in two runs in the eighth on an Abby Harvell double and a Harley Limberger single to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the eighth, the Skyhawks went down in order to give the Cougars the win.
Harley led the Skyhawks in the game by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs. Natalie Kreuziger (4-4) took the loss for UT Martin by giving up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts over four innings of work.
Game 2 – UT Martin 8, SIUE 0 (5 Inn.)
In game two, it was all Skyhawks with UT Martin scoring one in the second, five in the fourth and capping the game with a two-run, walk-off home run from Hustey. Ashtyn Green (7-3) threw a complete game, one-hit shutout in game two, while striking out four and walking none.
The offense in game two was spread evenly, as each of UT Martin's six hits in the game came from six different Skyhawks. Makarewicz had two runs, a triple and a walk in the contest, while Ava Scott, Gia Recrosio, Kennedy Brown and Dylan Scott all had a hit and an RBI
The Skyhawks and Cougars return to Bettye Giles Field Sunday to settle the series with game three at Noon.
