MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team plated double digit runs for the fourth time this season en route to a 10-1 series-clinching win over Lindenwood.
Â
Four Skyhawks had multi-hit games as UT Martin (13-13, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) outhit the Lions 13-6. Colten Payton recorded a team-best three hits behind a double and three RBIs. Andrew Lawerence continued his big week with his second home run in as many games, driving in three runs and smacking a double. Garner Anderson doubled and drove in two runs while TJ Dunsford also notched a two-bagger. Every Skyhawk in the batting ordered reach base safely on the afternoon.
Â
Cason Sharp (1-2) earned his first win of the season behind a quality start of six innings (season-high), four strikeouts (tied season best) and just one run allowed. The bullpen trio of Gabe Bryant (second consecutive appearance, no runs allowed), Will Turner (1.2 innings, no runs) and JP Nunn (one inning, no hits, no runs, one strikeout) combined to allow no runs in relief.
Â
Lindenwood (11-15, 0-5 OVC) jumped on UT Martin early in the first, but the run from the Lions wouldn't go without an answer from the Orange and Blue. TJ Grines led off the inning with a walk and stole second base which allowed him to score on Payton's double down the left field line. Lindenwood went 1-2-3 in the second then the Skyhawks grabbed the lead from Lawrence's second double of the series that scored JT Popick.
Â
Sharp recorded a second straight perfect frame to sit down nine Lions in consecutive fashion. The righty stranded two runners in the fourth and maneuvered his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to keep UT Martin up 2-1. Andrew Davis brought in Grines courtesy of a groundout in the home half of the fifth and Anderson tacked on one more from an RBI single through the left side to make it 4-1.
Â
To conclude his best start of the season, Sharp induced an inning-ending double play in the sixth. This gave way to Lawrence's second extra base hit of the game when the shortstop launched a ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer.
Â
Bryant and Turner combined to pitch a scoreless seventh while the Skyhawk offense brought another run home this time via a Popick sacrifice fly. Turner stranded two baserunners for another zero on the scoreboard for the UT Martin pitching staff. Payton plated two more runs in the eighth and Anderson doubled home Davis to put the cherry on top and give the Skyhawks a 10-1 edge.
Â
Nunn worked a perfect ninth and UT Martin captured its first OVC series win of the year.
Â
The series finale is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
