NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team took both games of a doubleheader from Tennessee State Saturday at Tiger Field in Nashville. The Skyhawks won game one, 13-2, in six innings, while taking game two, 6-2.
Game 1 – UT Martin 13, Tennessee State 2 (6 Inn.)
In the opener, UT Martin took an early 1-0 lead in the first, only to have Tennessee State score two in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. The Tigers' lead, however, was temporary as the Skyhawks scored one in the third and four in the fourth before exploding for seven in the sixth. Tennessee State had no answer for UT Martin pitcher Sami Scholtz after the first, as she threw five straight scoreless innings, with the game ending via the eight-run rule after the sixth.
Scholtz moved to 6-3 on the year with the complete game win in which she allowed just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Kyrsten Brown was 3-for-3 in the contest with a run, a walk and an RBI, while Karena Recrosio was 3-for-4 with three runs, a double and an RBI. Dylan Scott hit her first home run of the year in the game, while Carly Ward, Kennedy Brown and Kyrsten Brown stole two bases each.
Game 2 – UT Martin 6, Tennessee State 2
In game two, Kyrsten Brown got UT Martin on the board in the second with her second home run of the year, while Avary Makarewicz drove in Carly Ward in the third with a single to give UT Martin a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Tennessee State cut the deficit in half with a double from Nahia Campbell, followed by Dani James scoring on a Skyhawk error in the sixth to tie the game at two.
In the seventh, the Skyhawk bats came alive once again with a triple from Kennedy Brown, an RBI-double from Karena Recrosio and an RBI-single from Kyla Harley. Later in the inning, Carly Ward scored on a sacrifice fly from Makarewicz, while Harley scored on an RBI-groundout from Ava Scott. UT Martin's Ashtyn Green retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Skyhawks the 6-2 win.
Green allowed just one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts over a complete game to move to 6-3 on the year in the circle. Carly Ward was 2-for-2 in the game with two walks and two runs, while Jordyn Hustey was 2-for-3. Dylan Scott added a triple to the Skyhawks' cause in the game, while Makarewicz also stole a base.
