
Skyhawks Return Home To Host SEMO Friday and Saturday

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team returns to Bettye Giles Field this weekend to host Southeast Missouri in a three-game series in a schedule that has been altered due to possible weather on Sunday. The two teams will now play a single game on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at Noon.
The Skyhawks enter the weekend at 13-12 overall and 1-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play, after dropping a pair of extra-inning games at Lindenwood last weekend. UT Martin currently ranks second in the OVC in batting average at .295, while limiting opponents to a .276 average. Individually, Carly Ward is second in the OVC in batting average at .412, and Avary Makarewicz is third at .397, but leads the league in slugging percentage at .726.
Karena Recrosio and Kennedy Brown are currently first and second in the conference in stolen bases at 13 and 11, respectively. As a team, the Skyhawks are 31st in the nation and first in the OVC in total stolen bases at 42 and are 46th in Division I and lead the league in stolen bases per game at 1.68.
In the circle, Sami Scholtz has a team-low ERA of 2.87 with a record of 3-3 and a team-high of two saves. Ashtyn Green leads the Skyhawks in wins at 4-3, while Scholtz and Natalie Kreuziger are neck-and-neck in strikeouts at 30 and 29. As a team, the Skyhawks have a 4.91 and average 4.74 strikeout per seven innings.
The Skyhawks have racked up several awards through the first five weeks of the season. Makarewicz has been named Player of the Week by the OVC twice this season and once by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. Meanwhile, Scholtz and Payton Harris have been named as OVC Pitcher of the Week.
