Big Sixth Inning Propels North Alabama Past Skyhawks

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball fell in its final game at the South Alabama Invitational Sunday after a big sixth inning lifted North Alabama to an 8-4 win at Jaguar Field in Mobile

The game was back and forth from the start, with North Alabama scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Holly Merritt that scored Gyvan Hammons, who reached on a single to lead off the inning, for a 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks then answered in the third with a two-RBI single from Avary Makarewicz that scored Kennedy Brown and Jordyn Hustey, who each singled earlier in the inning. In the bottom of the third, Bayleigh Rouse tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the Lions' half of the inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Skyhawks retook the lead on a home run from Hustey, which also scored Addie Roberts, to make it 4-2. In the bottom of the fourth, North Alabama tied the game again on a two-RBI single from Rouse, for her second and third RBIs of the day.

However, in the sixth, the Lions scored four runs on three hits and two UT Martin errors to take a lead from which they would never relinquish. In the seventh, pitcher Kaylee Snyder retired the Skyhawks, in order, to give her team the 8-4 win.

Hustey finished the game by going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Makarewicz was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk.

Next up for the Skyhawks is the Blue Raider Classic Feb. 27 – Mar. 1 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, hosted by Middle Tennessee. Over the course of the weekend, UT Martin will take on the Blue Raiders twice and Akron three times.
