
UT Martin To Host Skyhawk Invitational; Schedule Shuffled To Accommodate Weather

MARTIN, Tenn. – Four teams will take part in the 2026 Skyhawk Invitational as the University of Tennessee at Martin softball program hosts the three-day tournament at Bettye Giles Field.
The tournament was originally set to take place on Feb. 13-15, but has now been shifted to Thursday, Feb. 12; Friday, Feb. 13; and Saturday, Feb. 14 due to forecasts of heavy rain in the area over the weekend. Joining the Skyhawks in the field are Mississippi Valley, Saint Louis and Valparaiso. Admission is $5 per day.
On Thursday, UT Martin will take on Saint Louis at 4 p.m., followed by Mississippi Valley and Saint Louis facing off at 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks will play two games Friday, first taking on Valparaiso at 9:30 a.m., then Mississippi Valley at 3 p.m. The other two games of the day feature Saint Louis and Valpo at 9:30, while Saint Louis and Mississippi Valley will close out the day at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the day begins with Saint Louis and Valpo at 9:30 a.m., followed by UT Martin and Mississippi Valley at Noon.
The Skyhawks are 38-27 all-time against this weekend's field, with a 10-3 record against Mississippi Valley, a 24-23 record against Saint Louis and a 4-1 record against Valpo. The weekend marks Mississippi Valley's first trip to Martin since 2005, Saint Louis' first trip since 2014 and the first-ever appearance at Betty Giles Field for Valpo.
UT Martin went 3-2 on opening weekend at the Frank Griffin Classic hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Florida. The Skyhawks dropped their first two games of the weekend to Indiana State and Stetson Friday, but bounced back with a pair of extra-inning wins over Seton Hall and Stetson on Saturday. UT Martin closed out the weekend its third straight win Sunday with a victory over Indiana State.
Kyla Harley and Ava Scott led the way for UT Martin offensively in Florida with batting averages of .471 and .412, respectively, with each starting all five games. Kennedy Brown started in two games for the Skyhawks, but played in all five, and finished the tournament with a .556 average. Scott drove in a team-high five RBIs on the weekend, while Jordyn Hustey drove in three with each hitting a home run.
In the circle for the Skyhawks, Ashtyn Green went 1-0 with a team-low ERA of 1.40 to go along with four strikeouts, all while holding batters to just a .205 average. Sami Scholtz also picked up a win and had a team-high five strikeouts, as did Joleanna Fox, who got hers by tossing the final frame in the eight-inning win over Seton Hall.
Valpo went undefeated at last weekend's DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois with wins over Detroit Mercy, Oakland and a pair over Green Bay. Marissa Jackson and Addie Young each hit .600 over the four-game stretch, while Madison Vrastil hit .538. In the circle, Sydney McDermott went 3-0 with a 0.58 ERA, a .171 opponent's batting average and 17 strikeouts.
The Billikens headed out west for opening weekend, taking part in UC San Diego's La Jolla Invitational, where they split with Montana, topped Wagner and dropped a pair to the host Tritons. Abby Uslas hit a team-best .375 in California and drove in a team-high four runs, while Abby Mallo also drove in four runs with two home runs and a .278 average. Both Anna Christ and Isabel Royle went 1-1 in the tournament with Christ posting a team-best ERA of 3.23 and Royle striking out a team-high eight batters.
After not playing last weekend, Mississippi Valley will open its season this weekend at the Skyhawk Invitational. The Devilettes are looking to improve on their 2-36 campaign from a year ago. Mississippi Valley returns its top two pitchers from a year ago in Madison Bruce and Ashtyn Clark and one of its top hitters, Kelsey Kaluna Thomas.
