
Skyhawks Fall to Western Illinois

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team put up a five-run sixth inning in hopes of a comeback win but fell 14-9 to Western Illinois.

Six Skyhawks achieved multi-hit games including Jalen Fithian, Brody Capps (double, RBI), Arderrius Townsend (double, RBI), Jonah Katsaboulas (RBI, walk, double), Cameron Greene (double, walk, two RBIs) and JT Popick (RBI). Garner Anderson (home run, two RBIs), Jordan Hudson (base hit) and Tommy Koch (two walks, RBI) helped add to the offense.

Drake Bayles (2-5) started the game for UT Martin (13-22, 4-7 Ohio Valley Conference) with Quin Long (1.1 innings pitched, three strikeouts), Austin Gast (one inning pitched, two strikeouts), Mason Shropshire (2.2 innings pitched, no runs, no walks, one strikeout), Kaleb Baskin (one inning pitched, no runs, no walks), JP Nunn (one inning pitched, one strikeout), J. Henry Hobson (one inning pitched, no earned runs, one strikeout) and Brock Arender (one inning pitched, no runs, no walks) making relief appearances.

Townsend got the Skyhawks on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to left center that scored Capps. Shropshire pitched a scoreless fourth that included a pop out, groundout and flyout to left. The righty Shropshire held Western Illinois (9-22, 4-8 OVC) off the scoreboard in the fifth from two flyouts and a strikeout.

Baskin worked a quick sixth frame after a groundout and a 4-6-3 double play. In the home half, Greene plated two on a double then Popick drove in Greene from an RBI single. A fielder's choice helped Popick score and Capps brought in Koch on a base knock to right center. UT Martin had cut the Leatherneck lead down to five with three innings to play.

Koch got Katsaboulas home in the seventh on a fielder's choice then in the eighth Anderson hit his third home run of the season which was followed by Katsboulas bringing in Capps on a sacrifice fly. Arender got a clean ninth inning, however the Skyhawks couldn't spark a rally in the home half.

UT Martin will be back at home on Thursday, April 17 to start a three-game set with Morehead State.
