MACOMB, Ill. – A walk-off home run by Payton Brown in the bottom of the ninth lifted Western Illinois to an 8-7 win over the University of Tennessee at Martin softball team Saturday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb.

Alli Robinson got the Skyhawks off to an early lead in the first when she doubled down the left field line to score Kennedy Brown, who reached on a single in the previous at bat. However, the Leathernecks added two runs in the second and four in the third including the first of two home runs by Payton Brown in the game.

Down 6-1, the Skyhawks added four runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Dylan Scott and a three-RBI double from Jordyn Hustey. In the sixth, Scott and Robinson once again provided the offense for UT Martin, allowing them to retake the lead. Scott evened the game early in the inning on a solo home run, while later in the inning Robinson gave the Skyhawks the lead on a double down the right field line to make it 7-6.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, RyLee German tied the game on a single to center field to eventually send the game to extra innings. In the eighth, both teams went down in order to send the game to what would be the decisive final inning.

In the top of the ninth, the Skyhawks went down in order again, leaving the door open for the Leathernecks. Western Illinois did not need long to take advantage as Payton Brown homered for the second time in the game to walk off with an 8-7 win.

The Skyhawks resume Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend when they make the long trip to Morehead State. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
