
Skyhawks Bounce Back To Split at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team split a doubleheader with Western Illinois Friday, falling game in game one 7-0, before bouncing back and taking game two 10-8 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb.
The Skyhawks had trouble getting any offense against the Leathernecks in game one, tallying just four hits with no runs. In contrast, Western Illinois pounded out 13 hits in the game and scored seven runs.
Dylan Scott was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game with a walk, while Natalie Kreuziger struck out six batters over the final three innings of the contest.
In game two, UT Martin got a hit in its first four at-bats and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with an RBI double from Dylan Scott, an RBI single from Alli Robinson and an RBI fielder's choice from Avary Makarewicz. However, Western Illinois answered by scoring in each of the first three innings with one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third to make it, 6-3.
In the top of the fifth, the Skyhawks tied the game on one swing of Robinson's bat, as she belted a three-run home run, her fifth of the season, to knot the game at six. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Leathernecks took back the lead on a pair of RBI hits to make it 8-6.
In the seventh, UT Martin put together one of its best offensive innings in conference play this season by scoring four runs on four hits and a Western Illinois error. Pinch hitter Joleanna Fox began the scoring with a two-RBI single to tie the game at eight. Ava Scott pushed across the go-ahead run later in the inning on an RBI groundout, while Kennedy Brown added an insurance run one batter later with an RBI single.
After allowing a leadoff hit to begin the bottom of the seventh, Natalie Krueziger retired the next three batters to earn the win for her team and herself. The sophomore gave up no runs on one hit with two strikeouts over the final two innings of the game to earn her second win of the season
Kennedy Brown was 3-for-5 in game two with a run and an RBI, while Robinson and Makarewicz were 2-for-4. Robinson finished the game with a run, a home run and four RBIs with Makarewicz adding a double and an RBI.
