Lindenwood Tops Skyhawks in Series Opener

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team attempted a late rally in Sunday's series opener with Lindenwood, but it was not enough. The Skyhawks fell, 10-5, to the Lions Sunday at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.

Lindenwood built an early lead over the opening two innings of the game, one that ultimately proved insurmountable for UT Martin. The Lions scored three runs in the first on a two-RBI double from Tori Hatton and an RBI single from Nicole Henson, followed by a three-run home run by Jolie McMinn in the second.

The Skyhawks cut the lead in the half, at 6-3, in the fourth on a two-RBI double from Carly Ward and an RBI single from Alli Robinson. Both teams added a run in the fifth inning before Lindenwood capped their scoring at 10 with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

In the seventh, the Skyhawks loaded the bases with two outs after a double from Dylan Scott and back-to-back walks from Robinson and Kyrsten Brown. UT Martin closed the scoring gap at 10-5 during Carly Ward's at-bat when a Lindenwood error allowed Scott to score. Despite having the bases loaded, the Skyhawks were unable to capitalize and took the 10-5 loss.

Scott and Robinson each had two hits in the game, with Scott scoring twice and Robinson driving in two runs and scoring one. The Skyhawks continued to be successful on the base paths in the game with Scott, Kennedy Brown, Kyla Harley, and Avary Makarewicz all stealing a base.

The Skyhawks and Lions return to Bettye Giles Field Monday to close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
