MARTIN, Tenn. – Senior Kayla Bryant piled up her seventh double-double in Ohio Valley Conference play this season but the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell by a 3-0 margin (21-25, 19-25, 19-25) to Southern Indiana at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
Bryant's double-double was her seventh in the last 10 matches as the outside hitter out of Louisville, Ky. has now recorded eight total double-doubles this fall. She accounted for match-highs of 11 kills (on a .226 hitting percentage) and 12 digs to guide UT Martin.
Maddy Gladson had nine kills on a .333 attack percentage while Ava Peters' 29 assists also led the Skyhawk offense. Dylan Sulcer made the start at libero and scooped up nine digs while Gladson and Carly Mueller each swatted away four blocks apiece.
A block assist from Gladson and Mueller served as the first point of the match. The Screaming Eagles soon went on a 7-1 run before Peters helped UT Martin get back on track with a hand in three straight points (assist, kill, solo block) that made the score 17-13. Back-to-back service aces from Sulcer helped the Skyhawks close their gap to three points (23-20) but Southern Indiana was able to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Bryant had team-highs of three kills and five digs while contributing three assists in the opening set.
Kills by four separate UT Martin players (Bryant, Gladson, Mueller, Kylie Surratt) gave the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead to start the middle stanza. Consecutive service aces by Peters plus a block assist from Gladson and Mueller helped UT Martin stretch its lead out to 12-7. However, the Screaming Eagles took their first lead of the set at 16-15 before ending the set on a 5-1 run. Surratt (four kills, .333 hitting percentage) and Peters (nine assists, two service aces, four digs) guided the Skyhawks in the second set.
UT Martin led early in the third set but soon found itself trailing by a 9-4 margin. Bryant caught fire soon thereafter, amassing four kills in a five-point stretch to help UT Martin slice its deficit to 11-10. Another Bryant kill helped the Skyhawks stay within striking distance (18-16) but Southern Indiana produced five of the next six points and UT Martin unfortunately could not recover. Bryant once again topped the Skyhawks in both kills (five, against just one error) and digs (five) while Peters divvied out 11 assists in the final set alone.
These two teams will wrap up their weekend series tomorrow at 10 a.m. as UT Martin will vie for a season split.
