MARTIN, Tenn. – Sophomore middle blocker Carly Mueller led the University of Tennessee at Martin with 11 kills on a .346 hitting percentage this afternoon but the Skyhawk volleyball squad dropped a three-set decision (20-25, 22-25, 16-25) to Southeast Missouri.
Rylee Key also put forth a highly efficient performance today as the freshman from Newbern, Tenn. collected nine kills on a .450 attack percentage (no errors in 20 swings). Dylan Sulcer posted 29 assists while Lauren Mariscal topped UT Martin (9-12, 4-6 Ohio Valley Conference) defensively with 13 digs.
Sophie Diouf produced kills on two consecutive Skyhawk points to help UT Martin take its first lead of the match at 7-6. The Redhawks (16-7, 9-1 OVC) scored five of the next six points but back-to-back kills from Maddy Gladson helped the Skyhawks get back within two at 17-15. A block assist from Mueller and Diouf kept UT Martin's deficit at two (19-17) but that was as close as the Skyhawks would get during the opening set. Diouf had three kills on a .600 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of blocks to lead UT Martin in Set 1.
The Skyhawks raced out to an early lead in the middle stanza but Southeast Missouri bounced back to take a 10-5 advantage. Key answered by immediately slamming down back-to-back kills before Mueller had the hot hand. The Hendersonville, Tenn. native landed five kills in a 13-point stretch as UT Martin evened the score at 22-all. However, the Redhawks ended the set with three unanswered points. Mueller (seven kills, .545 attack percentage) and Key (five kills, .625) guided the Skyhawks in the second set.
A service ace from Mariscal gave UT Martin a 5-3 edge to begin the third set. Southeast Missouri soon went on a 9-2 run before a kill from Mueller flipped the momentum back in favor of the Skyhawks. Another Key kill kept UT Martin within striking distance before Gladson put together back-to-back kills late but the Skyhawks couldn't overcome their deficit. Mariscal was responsible for seven of UT Martin's 12 digs in the final set.
The Skyhawks go on the road next week for a Thursday/Friday OVC series at Southern Indiana. Both start times from Evansville, Ind. are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.
