MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad ran into a hot-hitting Southeast Missouri squad tonight as the Skyhawks fell in three sets (21-25, 16-25, 17-25) in their Ohio Valley Conference series opener.
Rylee Key (.304 hitting percentage) and Sophie Diouf (.273) shared the team lead with nine kills apiece while Dylan Sulcer divvied out a match-high 30 assists for UT Martin. Maddy Gladson added seven kills and a team-best eight digs, sharing the team lead in the latter category with Lauren Mariscal and Abby Freund.
The Skyhawks (9-11, 4-5 OVC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind keys from Key and Diouf but the Redhawks soon went on an 8-3 run. After UT Martin trailed 17-13, a pair of Carly Mueller kills spurred a 5-2 Skyhawk run that ended when Mariscal landed a service ace that whittled Southeast Missouri's lead to 19-18. However, that was as close as UT Martin would get for the remainder of the set. The Skyhawks hit .312 in the opening set as Key, Diouf, Luli Arcucci and Mueller each produced three kills apiece.
UT Martin once again led early in the middle stanza but the Redhawks (15-7, 8-1 OVC) went on a 7-1 run soon thereafter. Chyler Martin soon accounted for a pair of kills during a 6-2 stretch for the Skyhawks as a Gladson kill forced Southeast Missouri to burn a timeout. The Redhawks then ended the set with nine of the final dozen points coming out of the aforementioned timeout. Gladson secured six of UT Martin's 12 digs in the second set.
Southeast Missouri scored six of the first seven points in the final set. The third Key kill in a seven-point span helped the Skyhawks pull back within striking distance shortly after the technical timeout. Gladson tallied two late kills to keep UT Martin close but ultimately the Skyhawks could not extend the match into a fourth set. The trio of Gladson (four kills), Sulcer (12 assists) and Freund (five digs) paced UT Martin in the final set.
The Skyhawks will go for a series split tomorrow when these two sides square off once again at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
