MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team left it all on the floor against Southern Indiana but the Skyhawks fell victim to a Screaming Eagle comeback in a four-set loss (25-15, 18-25, 18-25, 19-25) this morning.
A pair of UT Martin players recorded double-doubles today as Kayla Bryant (10 kills, season-best 21 digs) and Ava Peters (31 assists, 10 digs). Maddy Gladson narrowly missed a double-double herself with 10 kills, nine digs and a match-high five blocks. Kristin Phillips (eight kills on a .333 hitting percentage) and Chyler Martin (seven kills in her first start since Sept. 12) added notable offensive performances while Dylan Sulcer (career-high 20 digs), Abby Freund (12 digs) and Carly Mueller (four blocks) keyed the Skyhawks defensively.
Southern Indiana scored the first three points of the day but it was all UT Martin for the remainder of the set. The Skyhawks responded to their 3-0 deficit with five unanswered points, eventually stretching their lead out to as many as 11 points to take the early 1-0 advantage in the match. Gladson (three kills, two service aces and two blocks) and Bryant (10 digs) paced UT Martin in the opening stanza.
The Screaming Eagles knotted the match at 1-all after scoring 11 of the first 13 points in the second set. Four Gladson kills in the span of five Skyhawk points helped UT Martin pull within four points late but the early deficit was too large to overcome. Overall, Gladson owned six kills with just one error in 11 swings (.455 attack percentage) to lead the Skyhawks in the second set.
The third set featured seven tie scores as both sides jostled for momentum. Back-to-back Bryant service aces during a 5-0 UT Martin run evened the score at 11-11 but Southern Indiana soon broke a 14-14 tie with six consecutive points. Bryant managed two kills late in the set to keep the Skyhawks close but the Screaming Eagles took a 2-1 advantage in the match. Bryant (four kills, two service aces) and Sulcer (six digs) guided UT Martin in the third set.
The Skyhawks were well on their way to forcing a fifth set but Southern Indiana bounced back with a late surge. UT Martin led by a 17-13 margin after a Phillips putaway but the Screaming Eagles stormed back with eight consecutive points to cap off the win, taking their first lead in the set since 1-0 in the process. Bryant (four kills, six digs) was the biggest Skyhawk contributor in the fourth and final set.
UT Martin concludes the home portion of its 2025 schedule next week, taking on in-state Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 and 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14. A Senior Day ceremony celebrating the career contributions of Bryant and Phillips will be held prior to Friday's match.
